What Readers Say About Hey, Black Girl!

I love this book! I brought it for my 7 year old daughter and her friend and this book truly inspired them to love the skin they are in. So often little black girls don't have the chance to see themselves in a book but hey black girl reminds them of their intelligence, beauty and strength. HIGHLY RECOMMEND especially for teachers who are looking to diversify their classroom shelves.

Inspired by the challenges that Black girls and Black women face in America, Hey Black Girl is an anthem dedicated to raising Black girls’ self confidence. Starting at a very young age, Black girls are conditioned to speak up less, to dull our shine, to over give and self sacrifice. Now is our time to let the world see and experience our true light! Heyyyy all Black girls out there, purchase a copy for the little and grown Black girls you know and help to pioneer a new narrative. One that validates, uplifts, and inspires xoxo!

I love the book so much. I purchased a copy for each of the little black girls in my life who needed to know that they are enough and to be proud of every part of themselved regardless of what society thinks or says. I wish I had this book growing up because representation matters and is extremely important in building self-esteem.

About the Whitney B.

Whitney Barkley is an author, speaker, and advocate who uses storytelling to inspire youth and encourage self-confidence. She wrote Hey, Black Girl! as the affirmation she wished she had growing up—one that reminds Black girls of their beauty, brilliance, and limitless potential.

While the book is centered on the Black girl experience, its message is universal: every child deserves to feel seen, valued, and empowered. Whitney simply wanted to bring a perspective that celebrates and uplifts Black girls in a world that often overlooks their voices.

Expanding on this mission, she collaborated with Larry Carey to co-author Hey, Black Boy!, ensuring young Black boys also have a book that speaks to their greatness. Together, they crafted a message of resilience, self-worth, and pride, reinforcing that every child, regardless of background, has the power to shape their future.

Whitney is available for book readings, school visits, workshops, and programs that help young people build confidence, embrace their identity, and see the power in their own stories. If you're interested in bringing Whitney to your school, community, or event, reach out to learn more!
